Distribution of Phytophthora species within recreational chestnut, beech and cork oak forests

چکیده

Tree decline caused by exotic Phytophthora pathogens is a serious issue affecting forests around the world. The presence of has been reported in heavily visited natural forests; however, whether recreational are at higher risk being attacked than non-recreational yet to be explored. In this study, we sampled soil from 44 Catalonia (NE Spain) with high or low use that were dominated chestnut (Castanea sativa), beech (Fagus sylvatica) cork oak (Quercus suber). A systematic sampling 277 plots stands different tree species, predominantly Pinus and Quercus spp., was also conducted across compare soils baseline incidence region. putative impacts areas assessed measuring defoliation regeneration, performing pathogenicity trials using isolates root samples inoculate seedlings species growing native invasive chestnut, other species. For forests, found likelihood finding an more three times (76% vs 21%, respectively). No differences observed forests. exhibited levels without Phytophthora. both associated lower regeneration. Our data indicate widespread some used for recreation seems However, primary mechanism explaining prevalence remains unclear. Disturbance, movement due construction, visitors moving inoculum within sites could studied as possible contributing factors establish effective management actions.

Post-Fire Management of Cork Oak Forests

Cork oak ( Quercus suber L.) forests are def ned here as the range of habitats from open savanna-like woodland formations to dense forests. According to the European forest type’s nomenclature (EEA 2007 ) these ecosystems are included in the ‘broadleaved evergreen forest’ class and in the ‘Mediterranean e vergreen oak forest’ type. This forest type is dominated by the e vergreen sclerophyllous ...

Litterfall and mineral return in two cork - oak forests in northeast spain

Seasonal trends in littertall and potential mineral return were studied in two cork-oak forest sites in the northeastern Iberian peninsula. The estimated average litter production was 3.9 Mg.ha -1 .year for one site and 4.6 Mg.ha -1 .year for the other; these figures are similar to those reported for holm-oak (Quercus ilex) forests in the same area. Seasonal litterfall patterns were typical of ...

Integrative Ecology and the Dynamics of Species in Oak Forests

Lyme disease and gypsy moth outbreaks plague many temperate oak forests. Over the past decade, we have developed models and hypotheses designed to allow us to predict irruptions of both gypsy moths and the tick vector of Lyme disease. We have documented a web of connections involving mast production by oak trees, population responses by white-footed mice, habitat selection by white-tailed deer,...

A revision of chestnut-leaved oak (Quercus castaneifolia C. A. Mey.; Fagaceae) in Hyrcanian Forests of Iran

Chestnut-leaved oak (Quercus castaneifolia C. A. Mey) is one of the most important native oaks of Iran distributed in the Hyrcanian Forests. The pure and mixed stands of it cover about 6.5% of these forests. The species represents morphological variations which have resulted in the description of several infraspecific taxa by different authors. Eight taxa were recognized as subspecies and varie...
